Programs

It is also our belief that WOFAK has contributed and still continues to contribute significantly in ensuring reduction in mortality rates, though this accomplishment is relatively lower than expected due to wide-ranging socio-economic disparities of our clientele and the country generally. The Kenya national AIDS, STD, TB and Leprosy program (KNASLTP) reports that about 300 persons die from AIDS related complications every day, though many deaths still go unreported. It is true that these figures are represent great strides in care and support but are also considerably too high for our country, given that we are in the second decade in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It is therefore logical to conclude that alot of efforts and resources still need to be ploughed into the fight against HIV/AIDS in our Country.

These disparities are some of the factors that compel WOFAK to strive to do more, to ensure that more lives are progressively reached and positively impacted on, that quality wholesome living is enabled and hope is restored, for this is what really matters. This has been made possible as a result of the utmost commitment and dedication to duty of staff and volunteers of WOFAK, because of the enabling environment that the Government of Kenya (GoK) has given to WOFAK, the cooperation of our partner organizations in the civil society arena and because of the financial support that many of our development partners have continued to give to this work.

Counseling

“Counseling is therapeutic”, is the driving slogan and motto in our work. Since its inception, WOFAK has always recognized and employed counselling. Though largely unappreciated, counselling is a unique strategy that is not only therapeutic, but ultimately enables one to cope with an adverse condition or circumstance. HIV infection is one such adverse circumstance that has challenged people in an immense way, thus the need to employ counselling. The emotional and psychological trauma that HIV occasions onto people infected with it, calls for careful employment of counselling services by qualified service providers. WOFAK has institutionalized counselling as a form of care that goes beyond the physical human person, a therapy that embraces the body and mind and enables people to cope and live with an adverse situation, learning and making progressive decisions out of informed consent.

Counseling has taken the forms of pretest, post-test and followup at the resource centres, clients’ homes and at Hospitals. Counselling has also been conducted at groups at all the 7 resource centres, thereby promoting self acceptance and coping among persons living with HIV infection. Because of the increasing numbers of VCT (voluntary counselling and testing) centres and services, many persons end up at WOFAK, having been referred by other centres for support counselling. It is therefore expected, that more post-test and followup counselling than pretest are being offered at WOFAK.

In addition to counseling we have many other different activities that support our initiatives. These include:

  • Adherence support /counseling
  • Community sensitizations /advocacy
  • Medical care (Pharmacy, O.I drugs, clinic)
  • OVC care & support
  • Feeding Program
  • Nutritional care
  • Home & Hospital care visits (HBC)
  • Income generating activities (IGA)
